Brumbies trio Ryan Lonergan, Nick Frost and Rob Valetini are the early clubhouse leaders in Stan Sport’s Australian Super Rugby Pacific player of the year race.

After each round the Between Two Posts team of Sean Maloney, Morgan Turinui and Stephen Hoiles will be handing out their 3-2-1 votes towards their new ‘Posty’ awards.

The stakes are high in 2023 as Wallabies coach Eddie Jones runs the rule over the Test contenders with the ultimate carrot of a place in the Rugby World Cup squad.

SEAN MALONEY, Chief rugby commentator for Nine and Stan Sport

1 point: Lalakai Foketi, Waratahs centre

“He was excellent, two try assists. That ball he threw for (Max) Jorgensen was an absolute screamer. More of a second half performance but he lifted his team back into that match.”

2: Tom Wright, Brumbies fullback

“Every time he got near the ball the other night he was asking questions, he was probing, he was dangerous. He was very, very good.”

3: Ryan Lonergan, Brumbies halfback

“He was so influential in that result. Kicked incredibly, ended up being quite crucial with his shots on goal. Scored the opening try, was asking questions left and right.”

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham also paid tribute to Lonergan’s street smarts, catching the Waratahs napping with a cross-field kick for Andy Muirhead’s try.

“That’s the beauty of Ryan, he reads the game exceptionally well and knows how to control the game. That was pretty freakish,” Larkham said.

MORGAN TURINUI, Former Wallabies and Waratahs back

1 point: Max Jorgensen, Waratahs winger

“Just shading Corey Toole, I’ve got to give one to Max Jorgensen. That’s as good a debut as you’ll see. Two tries, I thought he was great.”

2: Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, Force halfback

“Played less than half a game, he decided that match. Two points for deciding that derby match.”

3: Rob Valetini, Brumbies flanker

“A great performance for the Brumbies.”

NEW PODCAST! Sean Maloney, Morgan Turinui and Stephen Hoiles are back for 2023 as they look back on a thrilling opening round of Super Rugby Pacific, check in on some socials and introduce ‘The Posty Awards.’

STEPHEN HOILES, Former Wallabies, Waratahs and Brumbies forward

1 point: Tim Anstee, Force flanker

“He gets through a mountain of work, I’ve enjoyed watching his transition out of the sevens to the XVs game. He’s become a very important player for the Force.”

2: John Ulugia, Brumbies hooker

“This guy wasn’t even meant to play Super Rugby this year, this guy was retired. John Ulugia, he played 75 minutes of Super Rugby, he came back to Canberra this year to be a scrum coach for the Canberra Vikings. He was just helping them out, so I thought that was outstanding. He’s been in France for 10 years, at a good club, Clermont, like he knows his stuff. I thought he was excellent.”

3: Nick Frost, Brumbies lock

“Sitting behind him (Ulugia) in the second row for the Brumbies, Nick Frost. Really influential, three points. A big year for him.”
