State of Origin news 2023
Canterbury Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould has offered a solution to the Women’s State of Origin schedule as the spectacle prepares to be played across two games for the first time in history.
Both games will take place next month with Game I at Sydney on June 1 before the next match goes to Townsville on June 22.
Traditionally, the game has been played as a one-off annual fixture.

Speaking during Nine’s coverage of the Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys fixture, Gould expressed his confusion over the two-game structure.
“So it’s a two-game series, if it’s 1-1 what happens then?” he asked.

When told it’d be based off a points aggregate, Gould was even more perplexed.
“Points aggregate? I’ll be campaigning for a decider, don’t worry girls I’ll get you a decider,” he said. “One game all then go on aggregate, please.”
The Bulldogs general manager then offered the club’s home ground for the decider.
“I’ll find a ground for them, come and play at Belmore if you like, I’ll put it on,” he said.
“There’ll be a decider if it’s 1-1, we’ll get a game on somewhere.”

Post-game, host James Bracey explained the aggregate system, with the winner’s title coming down to most points, and if they’re level on points it’ll be most tries, then most goals, most field goals, the least penalties and finally the first try-scorer.
Paul Gallen doubled down on the confusion.
“Seriously? Just give it to Gus, Gus will sort it out,” he said.

Despite signalling her intent for a three-game series, dual international and Channel Nine commentator Allana Ferguson saw the move from one game to two as a positive.
“It’s a step up, we’re not at three yet, let’s make that happen ASAP, but the fact it’s two games this year, that’s great because we’ve got a winner from 2023 State of Origin, so we’ll take the positive,” she said.
“The positive to that is they’ve obviously committed to two games.”
