Cricket news 2023, Australia vs India Test series, greats questions Cameron Green lbw decision in collapse

Former Australian cricketers Mark Waugh and Brad Haddin have questioned the system which sent Cameron Green packing at a crucial time during the third Test.

Green’s wicket was one of six that fell in the space of 40 minutes as the Aussies lost 6-11 in chaotic scenes on day two in Indore.

The towering all-rounder was trapped on the front pad by Umesh Yadav, and was given out by umpire Joel Wilson.

Green immediately reviewed the decision, and the ball-tracking system claimed the very top of leg stump would have been flicked by the ball.

The video decision was “umpire’s call” and so Green had to walk, given he had been dismissed by the on-field umpire.

Waugh and Haddin questioned whether the umpire only dismissed Green because he knew the Indians had no reviews left to use, while Australia had all three.

“That was a real changing point (in the innings). That’s probably given not out most days of the week,” Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

“The umpire was probably thinking Australia have got reviews, India haven’t, so I’ll give it out then leave it up to Australia to review.”

Haddin agreed.

“It was a big call, that Cameron Green lbw, that was a 50-50 at best,” Haddin said.

“The reason (the umpire) has gone for that is India had no referrals left, and Australia had three, so that was an unlucky dismissal.”

The Green wicket fell shortly after Peter Handscomb, and before the rest of the Australia batting line-up which was rolled before lunch on day two.

The Aussies took an 88-run first-innings lead – a vast improvement on any position they have been in so far this series – but missed a chance to put India to the sword with a big score.

Former Test quick Mitchell Johnson said the tourists had “crumbled” in Indore.
